Forty minutes drive from Taipei, Yilan County is known for its diverse natural ecology. Visitors can surf, go to a spa and and view whales and dolphins.

One of the not-to-be-missed experiences are the thermal springs spa and the carbonic acid cold spring spa. The cold spring is 21 degrees Centigrade all year round. Dipping into the spring, one becomes covered with air bubbles. It's refreshing and thought to provide medicinal benefit.

Another major attraction of Yilan are the ancient trees. This tree is named "Confucius". It's lived for 2560 years, which means it was contemporary with the ancient Chinese sage. Other trees here are named after Chinese historical figures.

Yilan boasts varied eco-systems. There are mountains, plains, coastal and river estuaries. The head of the county says although Yilan is still little known among mainland tourists, people here feel confident it will become a staple site when travellers come to Taiwan.
