Tartan has evolved over thousands of years.
For several centuries, tartan was the everyday garb of the Highlander. The distinctive designs became synonymous with clan kinship.
Today it has re-emerged as a principal symbol for the Scottish identity and the Scottish culture. Wearing of the tartan remains a tradition, even today.
In Edinburgh's old town, is the city's last tartan weaving mill.
Kilt design is moving on, into the 21st century.
