The distinctively patterned tartan cloth is an important part of Scotland's national dress. Many tartans, associated with Scottish clans have been known for centuries. Today's fashion designers are reinventing the kilt, to give it a contemporary look.

Tartan has evolved over thousands of years.

For several centuries, tartan was the everyday garb of the Highlander. The distinctive designs became synonymous with clan kinship.

Today it has re-emerged as a principal symbol for the Scottish identity and the Scottish culture. Wearing of the tartan remains a tradition, even today.

In Edinburgh's old town, is the city's last tartan weaving mill.

Kilt design is moving on, into the 21st century.
