The Haute Couture Autumn/Winter season opened with a sumptuous collection from Stephane Rolland in Paris, Monday. Galliano wowed with new Dior women's wear collection.

Stephane Rolland has been in the fashion business for over twenty years. He made his name as head designer for Jean-Louis Scherrer. The French label is in special favour among socialites and grandees dames.

Rolland launched his own label last year. The present showing marks his third independent collection.

The show was presented before an audience populated with glamour all its own in a stately old mansion on the Left Bank -- the Hotel de la Monnaie.

Rolland played with the cut and length of the clothes, which differed radically from one outfit to the next. The collection marked a departure from his showing last year.

Rolland seems to have stepped out of the Jean-Louis Scherrer milieu to produce a collection that is fresh and contemporary.

The Christian Dior show in Paris on Monday could bring a smile to the lips of the notoriously icy editor of U.S. Vogue, Anna Wintour.

British designer John Galliano delivered an ode to the magazine with his retro-flavour haute couture collection. He injected just enough sauciness to make it perfectly germane to the 21st century.
