Special Report:   60th Inner Mongolia Autonomous

There's always a fascination in viewing the artifacts of past glory but it's just as fascinating to look at modern times and discover traditional ways of life that are little changed over hundreds of years. The name Bayan Naor is not well known. But its produce is famous in China. It's part of China's "breadbasket" where the best wheat and oats are grown as well as the sweetest melons. Let's take a closer look and head for the vast grassland of Inner Mongolia.

In the Mongolian language, Bayan Naor means the lake of bountiful resources. Thus, even the name is believed to augur good fortune. The region is called "the barn" of Inner Mongolia. There is a mellow spirit here, where the grain is distilled into the best alcohol.

The museum guide said, "This is the painting of emperor Kangxi's private visit to Bayan Naor. He had no money with him, so he exchanged the alcohol for his waistband. Then he wrote a poem in appreciation of the superior distillation."

The museum also has in its collection the world's earliest tequila. It dates to the Han Dynasty more than two thousand years ago. The tradition has continued. Inner Mongolia has the largest bodega in northern China.

The region is also known for its ancient rock paintings. The vast array of ancient art is among the largest of its kind in the world. The paintings relate the lives of ancient nomads. Archeologists estimate the area has remained rich in grass and water resources for many millennia.
