Special Report: World tackles A/H1N1 flu |
The Chinese mainland has reported three new cases of A/H1N1 flu, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 24. Two of the new patients were discovered in Beijing. One is a 23-year-old Chinese male, who had studied in a US college. The other one is a 54-year-old Chinese American.
The third case involved a 23-year-old Chinese student in Fujian province, who was earlier reported as a suspected case. He just returned from Canada, where he studied. Also on Saturday, one patient was discharged from hospital in Shanghai after a sound recovery.
This is Mr. Shu's first walk as a free man after a week of strict medical observation.
The thirty-year-old Chinese national had lived in Australia and worked for an Australian company. He arrived in Shanghai on May the 23rd from Melbourne and was confirmed as the first A/H1N1 case in Shanghai two days later. He has been observed by ten doctors and nurses over the past few days, and finally it was the time to say good-bye. Mr. Shu left for the airport to fly to the northeastern city of Shenyang.
There are still three more flu patients hospitalized in Shanghai. All are in a stable condition.
Zhang Zhiyong, Director of Clinical CTR. for Public Health, Shanghai, said, "The temperatures of the three patients are now in a normal range. They are in good spirits, although the third one still has slight cough symptoms. If they can stay like this for three more days, we'll consider discharging them."
In the southern city of Guangzhou, health authorities are closely monitoring China's first case of domestic infection. The patient, a 24-year-old female, was infected by a man from New York on Monday.
Health authorities say, because the source of transmission is clear, which showed no evidence of sustained community transmission, there's no need to panic. They have now located and quarantined all the people in close contact with the female.
Guangzhou has stepped up flu prevention measures. Temperature checks at airports and sea ports have increased to three from the original one. Shopping malls and restaurants have also launched regular clean-ups.
Meanwhile, hospitals in Beijing and Shenzhen said their flu patients showed strong signs of recovery. They will keep them under observation for a few more days to consolidate their recovery.
