Special Report: Global Financial Crisis |
The United Nations is scheduled to kick off a three-day high-level meeting at its New York City headquarters to assess the global economic downturn.
The aim of the meeting is to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, especially on vulnerable populations. The talks are also expected to initiate a dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all member states.
This is the first high-level conference in the history of the UN to deal specifically with a financial crisis. So far, 126 nations have said they will attend along with 21 heads of state.
