China backs UN meeting on financial crisis

China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Liu Zhenmin says the UN Conference set for Wednesday has broad global support.

China wants to see the UN play a bigger role in addressing the international financial and economic crisis and hopes the conference will help developing countries out of the economic downturn.

Liu Zhenmin said, "The Chinese government attaches great importance to the conference. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi is expected to deliver a speech at the plenary session of the conference and will hold bilateral meetings with top UN officials as well as heads of delegations from other countries. He hopes the UN can play a bigger role in addressing the crisis. We also hopes the conference can provide a platform to weather the global financial crisis, and boost the common development of all countries."
