China-EU summit concludes

The European Union and China patched up differences at a summit on Wednesday in Prague. Both sides pledged to create a new global order to combat an array of challenges, including the financial crisis, dwindling world trade and climate change.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Czech President Vaclav Klaus -- whose country holds the EU presidency -- and European Commission President Jose

Manuel Barroso. Wen Jiabao said the fact he had travelled 10 hours to the Czech capital for a two-hour summit -- and was returning to China straight away -- demonstrated China's commitment to wipe the slate clean with Europe. He added that he came with sincerity, confidence and a sense of responsibility.

Three memorandums of understanding covering science, clean energy and small and medium size businesses were signed by the leaders.

After the summit, Wen Jiaobao announced that China would soon dispatch another procurement delegation to Europe to increase imports from Europe. He also urged the EU to recognize China's market economy status, and relax restrictions on exports of high-tech products to China.

Climate change was also a focus of the meeting. The EU said China is moving in the right direction by saving energy and reducing emissions. It also expressed hope that the EU and China would strengthen cooperation. And work together to try to reach a climate deal at the UN Climate Change Conferece in Copenhagen at the end of this year.

The two sides also announced that the 12th China-EU Summit will be held in Beijing later in the year.
