MACAO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- An official survey on manpower needs and wages released on Tuesday showed that the number of employees in Macao's major sectors registered an increase of 5.6 percent to 8 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2008, local sectors of wholesale and retail trade, transport, storage and communications, security activities, public sewage and refuse disposal activities had 26,012, 7,816, 3,910 and 658 paid employees, rising by eight percent, 6.4 percent, 5.6 percent and 6.1 percent year-on-year respectively, according to the results of the survey which was conducted by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The survey results were extrapolated according to the information collected from 893 local statistical units successfully interviewed, the DSEC said.

Meanwhile, the average earnings for full time employees of these sectors also registered growth in the period despite the economic downturn, with those of the wholesale and retail trade, transport, storage and communications, security activities, public sewage and refuse disposal activities up 6.9 percent, 5.2 percent,17.6 percent and 2.4 percent year-on-year, according to the survey results.

However, wholesale and retail trade, transport, storage and communications and security activities reported to have 1,728, 313and 476 vacancies, dropping significantly by 57.6 percent, 72.6 percent and 32.7 percent respectively in the period, according to the survey results.
