Housing and Urban-Rural Development vice minister, Qi Ji, told Wednesday's press conference that the government will renew efforts to help low-income families to own their own homes.

Qi Ji said the government will help 2.6 million low-income families to tackle housing difficulties this year. About 70 percent will receive a house provided by the government. The remaining families will receive government housing subsidies.

Qi Ji, Vice Minister of Housing & Urban-Rural Dev't said "The central budget will invest 33 billion yuan in housing this year. The figure is several times that of 2008 and 2007. "

Some NPC deputies and CPPCC members have suggested that the government build less affordable housing and more low-rent housing. Qi Ji said affordable housing and low-rent housing is a part of the social welfare system. Local governments have made great efforts to adjusting their policies according to community needs.

Qi Ji, Vice Minister of Housing & Urban-Rural Dev't said "In some regions with higher incomes and higher house prices, the affordable homes are being constructed in a large quantity, because there is a great need."

Qi Ji also said in some western regions with low-income families and low house prices, the government will increase the construction of low-rent housing.
