On the first day of the New Year holiday, Beijing saw a passenger flow of more than 300,000 by train. The capital's railway stations are doing their best to cope with the surge in passenger numbers. 91 extra trains have been put in place, and 410 ticket windows are running around the clock. In other parts of China, train stations have opened temporary ticket offices.

The Ministry of Railways says stations across China expect to handle a record 188 million passengers, up 8 percent year on year. The railway bureau has also warned travelers to schedule their journey as early as possible. Meanwhile, road traffic is comparatively stable, except for big volume increases in cities including Nanning, Qingdao and Chongqing.
