Fighter jets and helicopter gunships have pounded the north-west region over the past few days. Up to 500 militants have been reportedly killed.

The army is conducting a full-scale offensive after the government ordered troops to flush out militants from the Taliban stronghold.

Pakistan's military ordered people out of parts of the Swat Valley, temporarily relaxing a curfew to enable civilians to flee the conflict zone.
