Typhoon kills at least 24 in Philippines

A typhoon struck the northern Philippines on Friday killing at least 24 people. The storm dumped heavy rains and triggered landslides. Three people are missing.

Typhoon Cha-hom had maximum winds of 120 kilometers per hour when it made landfall overnight north of Manila. It rapidly weakened into a tropical storm, but caused widespread flooding.

Hundreds of people were moved to safety. About 20 typhoons and storms hit the Philippines each year, but, usually, not this early.

Forecasters suggest the extreme weather may have been caused by global warming.
