Health experts warn that countries in the region could soon become vulnerable.

So far, the worst affected nations, such as Mexico, the US, Canada and countries in Europe, have been in the northern hemisphere. South of the equator, the weather is cooling down.

Experts warn that regular flu, which typically spreads in winter, may collide with the new virus and combine to make it more transmissible or more dangerous.

The virus has spread to Colombia in the first confirmed case in South America. And in Central America, two cases have been confirmed in El Salvador.

The Peruvian government has announced the suspension of flights from Mexico and tighter controls on all international flights.
