Obama vows broader partnership with states in western hemisphere

US President Barack Obama has pledged to renew and sustain a "broader partnership" with other states in the western hemisphere.

Obama made the statement in an editorial that was carried in many newspapers throughout the region.

He says the US was distracted by other priorities in the past and failed to see that US progress is tied directly to progress throughout the Americas.

President Obama says one of the US's priorities now is to develop ties with American countries to seek common prosperity and common security.

He released the editorial on the eve of the Summit of the Americas, which is to be held in Trinidad and Tobago this weekend.
