At the end of closed-door consultations on Sunday, the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Japan reached a consensus on a draft statement concerning the DPRK's rocket launch. The members will now discuss the precise wording of the text with their respective governments.

Senior Chinese diplomat Zhang Yesui said the five permanent members of the Security Council have consistently pushed for a cautious response to this issue.

Zhang Yesui, permanent representative to the UN, said, "Our stand is very clear. We think the response of the Security Council should be conducive to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, and should promote the process of the Six-Party Talks."
