Children subsidized to get education in Tibet

In old Tibet, 95 percent of Tibetans were illiterate because only the nobles and a few of monks had the rights of education. But the illiteracy rate has now dropped significantly, as almost all school-age children in Tibet have access to education with subsidies from the government.

Yang Ji is a grade three junior middle school student. Her home is in a small county 60 kilometers away from the school.

Yang Ji said, "I'm not homesick now, because the school and teachers care for us very well."

In Lhasa, from 1985, all boarding school students from farming and herding families have had a right to free meals, free accommodation and free stationery up until the end of junior middle school.
