Former Iraqi officials face death sentence

An Iraqi court has handed the death sentence to three top officials from the regime of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Monday's trial sought justice for a 1999 crackdown that aimed to quell a Shiite backlash over the slaying of Grand Ayatollah Mohammad al-Sadr.

The three defendants included Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as Chemical Ali, who ordered poison gas attacks against the Kurds in the 1980s.

The others were a former intelligence official, Mahmoud Faizi al-Hazaa, and a top Baath Party official in the Baghdad region, Aziz Saleh al-Numan.
