Barack Obama has confirmed that Christopher Hill will become the new US ambassador to Iraq.

Barack Obama has confirmed that Christopher Hill will become  the new US ambassador to Iraq.

The appointment follows speculation that Hill was the leading candidate to replace Ryan Crocker as the top US diplomat in Baghdad. Speaking to Marines at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on Friday, Obama said Hill has shown the "pragmatism and skill" that is needed in Iraq.

Hill is a career foreign service officer who most recently served as the Bush administration's top negotiator for the six-party talks on the DPRK's nuclear issue. Earlier, Hill had served as a negotiator in the crises in Bosnia and Kosovo.
