European Parliament President visits Israel

A two-state solution in the Middle East was brought up by European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering, during his visit to Israel on Tuesday.
He met with Israeli Prime Minister Designate Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres, and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

After talks with Netanyahu, Poettering said the European Union and the European Parliament were in favor of a two-state solution.
Poettering arrived in the region on Monday. He first visited the Gaza Strip to assess humanitarian needs and ways in which Europe can help rebuild the Palestinian territory. Later on Monday, he travelled to Israel.
Hans-Gert Poettering, European Parliament President, said, "We hope there is, when there is a new government, a new approach to peace and we in the European Union and the European Parliament and the European Union are in favour of a two state solution, that means Israel in safe borders and Palestine in safe borders and I think we have to make a new approach for peace."
