Special Report: Israel airstrikes in GazaDAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has urged Israel and Palestine to look for immediate ways to end the fighting that has so far killed hundreds of people in the region.
The Tanzanian president, who is serving as the chairman of the African Union, issued the call through a media statement after closed-door talks with the ambassadors of Israel and Palestine at the State House on Thursday.
President Kikwete said in the statement: "Tanzania believes that there is no military solution to Palestine-Israel conflict and that such actions (ongoing fighting) serve only to increase tension in the region."
The Tanzanian president added that the killings were horrifying and that only those two sides (Palestine and Israel) have the key to halting the hostilities.
President Kikwete told Palestinian Ambassador to Tanzania, Nasri Khalid Abu Jaish, that it was crucial that the Hamas should stop its rocket attacks against Israel.
The president told Israeli Ambassador to Tanzania, Jacob Kdeidar, that the Israeli fury has gone too far and its military actions has provoked vile international reactions in that its actions were causing unjustifiable deaths among the civilians.
