Japanese rescue team arrives in Chengdu

A Japanese emergency relief team comprised of 31 members has arrived in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. They got there at midnight on Thursday. Another 29 emergency team members are expected to arrive before noon on Friday.

The rescue professionals are assigned to work in Qingchuang county, nearly 400 kilometers away from Chengdu. More than 700 villagers are buried under a mud-rock flow there. The mud-rock slide has also trapped a bus with over 20 passengers. The Japanese team is the first foreign aid group to begin work in the region since the disaster struck.

The team leader says they are planning to stay in China for about a week. But they may stay longer depending on the severity of the situation. Meanwhile, in Japan, local communities have also begun fund-raising efforts for the quake-stricken people in China.
China accepts more int´l quake rescue offers
The Chinese government has also accepted offers from Russia, South Korea and Singapore to send rescue professionals to earthquake-struck Sichuan Province in southwestern China. Full story >>
