The earthquake seriously affected tele-communication  networks. Operators say more than 3,000 base stations  stopped working.

China Mobile says call volume in Sichuan surged to about seven times its normal level. In Chengdu, about 45 percent of calls failed to be connected. Tele-communications in the south of Gansu province and Chongqing municipality are now restored.

Zheng Xiaoming, Network Dept. of China Mobile, said, "Since too many people called at the same time, the lines are blocked. So, when failing to make a phone call, people can call later, or use short messages."
