Cheney asked Massoud Barzani to play an active role in the country's reconciliation effort and in the negotiations for a long-term US-Iraqi relationship.

Barzani reiterated the Kurds' commitment to continuing to play a positive role to help build a new Iraq with democracy and pluralistic freedom.

Cheney said the United States and Iraq's Kurds built a special friendship after the 1991 Gulf war.
