The rare attack in the holy Shi'ite city of Kerbala, in southern Iraq, came Monday.

It happened in a cafe frequented by day labourers in the centre of the city. Nearby, is the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the holiest sites of Shi'ite Islam.

The head of the emergency ward at Kerbala's main al-Hussein hospital, says 27 of the dead were taken there, as well as 47 of the wounded. There's no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The U.S. military however, suspects the Sunni Islamist al Qaeda. The group considers Iraq's majority Shi'ites heretics.

The al Qaeda group is using women increasingly in a stepped-up campaign of suicide bombings.
