European observers deploy in Pakistan

EU election observer teams are fanning out across northern Pakistan ahead of next month's parliamentary elections.

Twenty-four long-term election observers, drawn from various EU member states, will be based in main cities in Punjab Province.

The decision was made after an assessment of the security situation after the assassination Benazir Bhutto and the violence that ensued.

The European Commission decided to expand its team of observers by adding several dozen people over the next few weeks.

The teams are to assess the election campaign, the ballot, the performance of the judiciary and the overall climate.
