Financial discussion between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is underway in New York.

A US Treasury official described the first day of talks as "cordial and business-like".

Deputy Assistant Treasury Secretary Daniel Glaser says the dialogue is to help the DPRK better understand international financial practices, and to discuss steps the country must take to reintegrate into the international trade system.

The DPRK delegation declined to comment. The meetings follow the resolution earlier this year of a long-running dispute over roughly 25 million US dollars in DPRK funds held in a Macao bank.

The US eventually facilitated the return of the money to Pyongyang, to revive a multilateral agreement under which the DPRK has agreed to abandon its nuclear programs.
