China, ASEAN to strengthen cooperation on food safety

Special Report: Premier Wen visits SingaporeChina and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have issued a joint statement saying they would strengthen cooperation on food safety. They'll also promote trade in food and protect consumers' right and interests.
The Nanning Joint Statement was issued at the end of the two-day China-ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Quality Supervision, inspection and Quarantine with eight points of common understanding.
They pledged to encourage exchanges of information about food safety laws and regulations in line with the principle of transparency. They agreed to designate contact points for timely notification of information on food safety and strengthen cooperation to combat illegal food trade and prevent intentional creation of food safety problems.
The head of China's quality watchdog says there is increasing cooperation between China and ASEAN in both food and agricultural sectors.
