Special Report:   Chang'e I -Journey to the Moon

China's first moon orbiter, Chang'E One, is scheduled to blast off later on Wednesday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The orbiter is expected to relay its first picture of the moon late next month and continue its scientific survey for a year.

Here is the Brain of the Chang'E orbiter. The black boxes are computers that handle all the calculations and coordinate with navigation and control systems. The computers will send instructions to the engines which will adjust the orbit and posture of the Satellite after fueling and ignition. This solar panel can extend to 18 meters to provide energy for the Satellite.

Pre-launch tests have been successful and ground control is now busy with preparations. However, experts warn that weather is a key factor in deciding if the lunar orbiter can be launched on schedule. But the meteorological observations and analysis forecast good weather.

Chang'e One is named after the legendary Chinese fairy who flew to the moon. Once in lunar orbit, the satellite will undertake a series of projects including capturing of 3-D images and analyzing the distribution of elements on the moon's surface.

China's moon exploration project was initiated in 2004. If successful, Wednesday's orbiting mission will become the third milestone in China's space achievements after manned flights in 2003 and 2005.
