Special Report: Chang'e I -Journey to the MoonThe National Space Administration says it will launch its first lunar orbiter, Chang'e One, between this coming Wednesday and Friday at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, in the southwestern province of Sichuan. It says the best expected launching window is Wednesday at around 6pm local time.
The satellite will photograph the lunar surface and collect data for analysis of its thickness. Chang'e One will relay the first pictures in late November and continue its mission for a year.
Li Guoping, Spokesman of China National Space Administration said "The engineering targets of this Chang'e One mission are to launch China's first lunar probe satellite to get preliminary techniques of tracking and control and to carry out scientific research on the Moon. It's also to establish China's space exploration system for lunar probing and to accumulate experience for future projects. China will be involved in international cooperation to peacefully explore the Moon for common prosperity."
