A US helicopter has opened fire on a group of Iraqis in a Sunni stronghold north of Baghdad. The US military says 11 people were killed in the incident.

They say the men were allegedly planting roadside bombs near the northern city of Samarra. The helicopter then chased them into a nearby house and continue to fire at the suspected militants.

The military regrets the civilian deaths but blame the insurgents for putting their lives in danger. Iraqi police and witnesses say at least 14 people were killed, including four women and eight children. This is the third time US airstrikes have claimed civilian casualties during recent days.
