80 Iraqis die in attacks after Saddam hanged in Baghdad

At least 80 Iraqis have died in bombings and other attacks on the same day when Saddam was executed. Six US soldiers were also killed on Saturday.

The bombings came hours after Saddam was hanged in Baghdad. Despite concerns about a spike in violence, Saturday's killings were not unusually high for Iraq, nor did they appear to be in retaliation for the execution. The US military in Iraq reported that with six more American deaths, December was the bloodiest month of this year for US forces. The total US death toll in Iraq is almost three thousand. December also appeared to be one of the worst months for Iraqi civilian deaths.

Over 2,000 Iraqis have been killed in war-related or sectarian violence this month. The actual number is likely higher as many murders go unreported.
