More than 2 million Muslim pilgrims expected to Mecca for haj

Muslims from around the world began arriving in Saudi Arabia this week, with more than 2 million expected to take part in this year's haj.

Stampedes and hotel collapses have marred the pilgrimage in recent years. 50,000 police and security are expected to be deployed in the Mecca area to combat potential militants, demonstrators, and disorderly behavior. They will also be used to control overcrowding.
