Several hundred Chinese pilgrims have departed from the northwestern city of Lanzhou on a special chartered flight bound for the Hajj to Saudi Arabia.

Farewell kisses from pilgrims to their beloved grandchildren.

Hundreds of people are here to see off their relatives and friends before the most sacred journey of their lives. The road ahead may be arduous. But for all the pilgrims here, their lifelong dream will soon be realized. They bless each other for a safe journey and a successful completion of their holy mission to Mecca.

This year, nearly 10 thousand Muslims will head for Mecca, the highest number ever. About 300 of them are taking the first Hajj flight today. Over the next 2 weeks, others will depart from 4 Chinese cities.

China's Islamic Association has chartered planes to transport Muslims to Saudi Arabia since 1989.

The organized pilgrim group is seen as safer and more efficient than independent visits.

Hong Changyou, deputy chairman of China Islamic assciation, said: "We will continue to organize these pilgrim groups in the future. It saves people a lot of effect and money. And it also contributes to a smooth and orderly Hajj in Saudi Arabia."

The practice has been praised by Saudi Arabia.

Even at the corners of the airport, these faithful Muslim pilgrims still remember to perform their daily prayers. Many of them say the organized trip helps them focus on the purpose of their journey.

Half of these pilgrims are senior citizens.

This 70-year-old man says it's hard to imagine going to Mecca by himself, as he doesn't have enough energy. He appreciates the government's arrangements, which are helping him realize his life's dream.

This year, will be the first time that Hajj charter planes fly directly to Medinah, instead of the capital, Jeddah. This will save the pilgrims at least 5 hours on the road.

Among the 30 Hajj charter planes, 14 will take off from Lanzhou.
