Nearly 3,000 people are hiding in schools and Buddhist temples in northeast Sri Lanka after fleeing rebel artillery fire.

This comes as a second day of fierce fighting left dozens dead and wounded.

The military says 12 soldiers were killed by Tamil Tiger artillery shells in the eastern district of Batticaloa, with about 40 others wounded. Meanwhile, the rebels claim 10 civilians were killed in army shelling. Officials say several hundred civilians arrived in the government-held town of Kantale in the far northeast on Saturday and nearly 2,000 more joined them on Sunday.

Now up to 2,800 people are sheltering in Kantale's schools and Buddhist temples.
