The Tamil Tigers say that Sri Lankan army artillery has hit two camps in rebel territory in the island's northeast. Fifteen refugees were killed and many more were wounded.
The Tamil Tigers blamed the deaths and injuries on government forces. Wounded civilians, including children, were taken to a military hospital for treatment.
C.K. Nandini, Sri Lankan refugee said, "We were at home when the shell fell. It injured us and damaged part of the house,"
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam said the military mounted a major offensive in the eastern district of Batticaloa to push into their territory. But the army issued a denial, and accused the rebels of using civilians as cover.
Two days earlier the army had accused the rebels of a similar attack.
They said Tiger artillery hit a school in northeast Sri Lanka, killing five and wounding ten others.
The military said the Tigers continued to fire artillery further north in the neighboring district of Trincomalee on Saturday, and said two soldiers were killed and 30 injured in retaliatory strikes.
