The next UN Secretary-General says the Security Council will discuss the possibility of another resolution on the DPRK. Ban Ki-Moon says it depends on how the situation develops.
Ban Ki-Moon, who is also South Korea's Foreign Minister, said the Security Council may pass a new resolution, if the DPRK carries out another nuclear test. Upon arrival at South Korea on Thursday, he urged the DPRK to comply with the UN resolution and refrain from further aggravating the situation.
Ban said, “We cannot rule out that possibility of another test. But we hope that North Korea will face the response from the international community and also reality. And wouldn't it be more desirable if they acted with more responsibility, as a member of the international community.”
Ban is set to hold a three-way meeting in Seoul with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso to discuss the DPRK nuclear issue.
Ban said he was ready to travel to the DPRK himself. He also said he plans to appoint a special envoy to the DPRK, a post that has been vacant for 18 months.
Ban was appointed by the UN General Assembly on Friday as the eighth secretary-general of the United Nations. He is to succeed Kofi Annan, who steps down at the end of this year.
