We continue with our special series on Xinjiang. China believes prosperity and stability are key in dealing with the unrest in the northwestern Uygur Autonomous Region. Xinjiang is home to several different ethnic minorities. Border trade is one measure.
Today in the Uygur Autonomous Region, the major religion is Islam. Prior to the arrival of Islam, it was Buddhism. One of the greatest legacies from that time is the murals, in the Grottoes of Qiuci, another name for the ancient kingdom of Kucha.
