US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Committee says it's to honor his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people.
The committee says Obama created a new climate in international politics, and returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the Uinted Nations to the center of the world stage. It also cites his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to nuclear non-proliferation.
Since taking office in January, Obama has called for disarmament and worked to restart stalled Middle East peace process. He became the third sitting US president to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
