In a bid to initiate talks with six major powers on global issues, Iran handed over a new package of proposals for discussion on Wednesday.
China's Foreign Ministry confirmed that the proposals had been received and that negotiations are underway.
In response to a question regarding China's position on imposing further sanctions against Iran, the Foreign Ministry said that punitive sanctions and pressure on Iran would neither help resolve the nuclear issue, nor be conducive to the resumption of international talks.
Under current circumstances, China is urging that a long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue be found through talks.
