Chilean troops in Haiti follow quake news

2010-02-28 12:50 BJT

Special Report: 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile |

Chilean troops serving as part of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti are following news of the massive earthquake in their home country.

The quake has left the troops concerned for loved ones back home. 550 Chilean troops and pilots are playing a significant role in the peace-keeping and aid mission in Haiti.

Chile's military says there are no immediate plans for their soldiers to return home to help in the recovery effort. The military says nearly a third of its personnel have been unable to contact their families in Chile.

Lieutenanat Col. Guillermo Paiva, Chilean Soldier in Haiti, said, "This is hard. But the mission of any Chilean soldier is to stay where he is needed. I would like to be with my family in Chile. But my duty calls for me to be here. I'm calm because I know my family will be okay. We have to keep working to help Haitians get over the great grief that this country is going through."
