Evacuation in Ecuador goes smoothly

Special Report: 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile |

Tourists and residents in Ecuador's Galapagos Islands have evacuated to shelters after a tsunami alert.

Unlike other tsunamis in recent years, emergency officials along the Pacific rim this time have hours to prepare and to possibly evacuate local communities.

Residents of the Galapagos have been moved to higher ground, and a local official says the evacuation has gone smoothly.

Luis Criollo, Local Official, said, "We worked from the moment the possible alert was announced at two in the morning, until the alert was confirmed at five in the morning. We had already made plans and have managed a seamless evacuation of affected people and personnel."
