Power supply unaffected by snow

2010-01-05 13:05 BJT

The State Grid Corporation of China says the cold front hasn't affected the electricity supply.

To deal with the icy conditions, the State Grid launched an emergency plan at the end of December. The corporation issued a blizzard alert to its branches in northern China before the heavy snow began falling Saturday night.

In November 2008, a blizzard severely damaged the country's power supply system. The State Grid then allocated 9 billion yuan for an ice-resistant transmission project, due for completion this year. Currently, a 24-hour-blizzard monitoring system is set to keep watch on precipitation, wind speed and ice thickness. Mobile ice-melting devices are able to thaw 100-kilometers of cable wire in 90 minutes.
