Special Report: UN climate change conference in Copenhagen |
Fifteen thousand delegates and journalists are about to attend the United Nation's climate conference in Copenhagen the next two weeks. The conference venue is called Bella Center, about seven kilometers outside the city.
It is a green building, showcasing what organizers are promoting -- energy conservation and sustainable development. Peter Koveos tells us more.
"Climate kitchen", "Help us recycle", you can find posters like these throughout the 76-thousand square meter center.
"Green" is a key word here. Various plants provide a refreshing look to the venue. Even dining areas are decorated with plants, reminding people of the conference's core value.
Energy conservation also features prominently in the venue. During the meeting, eleven restaurants here will provide participants with 100-thousands formal meals. More than half are organic. Using recycled tableware, plastic bottles, and paper cups is highly encouraged, demonstrating the importance of environmental protection.
Wind-powered generators are also installed at the Bella Center. The warming system takes advantage of the heat generated during the process of garbage burning. Organizers also offer 40 electrically-operated motors and 200 bicycles to all the attendants.
The Bella Center used to be an ancient construction. In 2007, the Denmark government began renovating it into an energy-conserving building at a cost of 2.5 million euros. Danes are proud of the center, which has reduced 20 percent of green house gas emissions in the past two years.
As the Copenhagen climate conference approaches, the green center will act as a lead, in efforts of making earth a better place.
