Obama: Afghan situation critical

US President, Barack Obama, has met with the head of NATO at the White House, to discuss the on going war in Afghanistan.

The meeting coincided with a UN Special envoy's call for more international support for Afghanistan.

NATO's Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has assured President Obama of the alliance's commitment to the Afghan war. The meeting comes as Obama weighs the option of sending additional troops.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO's Secretary General, said, "This alliance will stand united and we will stay in Afghanistan as long as it takes to finish our job."

The UN special envoy to Afghanistan, Kai Eide, says that more international troops are needed to train and equip the Afghan army.

He also urged the international community, especially European countries, to increase financial and material support.

Kai Eide, UN Special Envoy, said, "All this training, equipping of the police and the army can not be a sole US effort. There must be much wider engagement. I therefore strongly appeal to other countries to step up contributions in manpower,
