New flower variety in China Pavilion unveiled

Anthurium and the Pineapple flower, will be the major decorative flowers in the China Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. Organizers unveiled the new variety on Tuesday.

This is a new type of Pineapple flower, named"Chinese Red". It's cultivated by Shanghai Flower Harbor.

Expo organizers chose from hundreds of flower varieties, eventually deciding that the China Pavilion will be adorned by "Chinese Red" and Anthurium.

Guo Honghua, deputy manager of Shanghai Flower Harbor, said, "We have chosen these two types of flowers because they are adaptable to the humid environment. And their blossoming periods are also relatively longer. Their colors are a perfect match to the pavilion."

It's estimated that up to 100 thousand pots of flowers and plants will be used during the six-month expo. Gardeners will begin working inside the China Pavilion around April 10th.
