Toyota to shut down assembly plants even after recalls

Special Report: Toyota Worldwide Recall |

Toyota says it plans to temporarily halt production at two assembly plants while it grapples with massive recalls in the United States. A plant in Texas is being shut down for two weeks, allowing it to retool for a production switch. A Kentucky plant that makes the popular Camry model will also shut, but only for a few days.

Toyota says the changes are in response to incoming orders. Toyota has recalled 8 and a half million vehicles globally during the past four months because of problems with gas pedals, floor mats and brakes. It's threatening to undermine the safety and reputation for quality of the world's No.1 automaker.
