Dumplings, thin pancakes and spring rolls are just some of the delicacies featured at the China Culture Week at Oxford University, held during the Spring Festival. Chinese food has lured hundreds of locals to the activity, including students on campus, local residents, and Chinese people living overseas.
The Chinese food tasting event was held on the night of the Chinese lantern festival. The 200-square meter venue was fully packed, forcing organizers limit attendance. Many of the participants learned how to make normal dumplings and rice dumplings on the spot. Many in the crowd spoke Chinese. Joe is one of the people learning how to wrap dumplings.
The dumplings and the rice dumplings were so popular. You had to stand in line for six rounds before finally getting a taste. A crowd also converged at one spot where cocktails made with Chinese wine was being served.
"It is very strong, but it is nice. Yeah, I like it a lot," Visitor Holly said.
Visitors were spoiled for choices with delicacies from around China here on offer, such as thin pancakes, fried rice dumplings and bean curd from Tianjin. And the school's Asia Pacific Association brought along some representative dishes from other regions.
The Oxford Chinese food festival is just one of the four parts of the China Culture Week at the school. The three others focus on calligraphy, movies, and wood block printing.
"I enjoy doing it. I always have it at room. Definitely I will," Chinese calligraphy practitioner Tom said.
The Oxford China Culture Week attracted nearly a thousand people, while the three-hour long Chinese food tasting event drew 600 people. It's clear that Chinese culture is winning over the world, one dumpling at a time.
