Iraqi federal police forces have engaged ISIL militants outside the village of Al Arij, south of Mosul.

Special response team members fired at suspected ISIL positions from the roof of a newly-captured building.

A police spokesman says they are preparing to advance toward the Mosul airport over the next few days.

Iraqi security forces broke into eastern Mosul several weeks ago. But they have yet to reach the city from other directions.
