The Chinese Foreign Ministry says China has urged the US to abide by the One China policy and the principle of the three China-US joint communiques to avoid unnecessary disruption to bilateral ties. During a speech reviewing China's foreign policies in 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi dismissed the call as a "petty action" by Taiwan. The phone call was an unprecedented break with the US' policy with China established in 1979.
"It was just a petty action by Taiwan. It will not change the One-China framework already formed by the international community, and the One China policy that the US government has adhered to for years," Wang Yi said.
"The One China policy is the cornerstone and fundamental basis of the development of healthy relations between China and the US. Of course we hope this principle will not be interfered with or damaged in any way."
